Doors in a load bearing wall that holds the weight of the house created by beams and trusses need a larger header than those in non load bearing walls. The procedure for constructing a header for 6 inch exterior wall framing can be modified for any wall thickness. If you notice that your garage door header is starting to sag or has developed cracks then you may have a serious structural problem.

These 9 foot openings are only supported by a makeshift header consisting of 6 cinder blocks sitting horizontally across the top of the opening. Building a structural header for a garage door opening can be handled on the jobsite and will offer the same structural support as more expensive solid wood beams.
