Gutter width can take up 1 4 to 1 2 from the page therefore there must be an extra 1 4 1 2 of safety margin space on the side of the page where the gutter spine will be.

When laying out pages gutters should not be so narrow that columns run together.
Generally speaking 0 5 inches for your gutter margin is recommended for most books.
